Gougane Barra is a settlement to the west of Cork, close to Macroom.
It's one of the tourist attractions the southern part of Ireland. The name comes from Saint Finbarr who built a monastery on a small island in the nearby lake during the 6th century. It's said that the current ruins were build by priest Denis O'Mahony around 1700. Gougane Barra was a safe place for Roman Catholics to celebrate during the penal laws.
